Matthew J. Trowbridge, MD, MPH
Dr. Trowbridge is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he leads work at the intersection of health, the built environment, and technology innovation.
He previously served as the Chief Medical Officer at the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), where he shaped global standards for buildings that support human health. He led the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded Green Health Partnership and developed the GRESB Health and Well-being Module — a global benchmark for health performance in real estate.
At UVA, he created the Health Design Sprint, an innovative medical education course that teaches future physicians to think like designers and apply systems thinking to complex health challenges.
His consulting practice draws on two decades of experience across academic medicine, public health research, building science, and health technology — providing clients with a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective on how to create environments and systems that measurably improve health outcomes.
